Lazerian builds racing car entirely from electronic waste

Discarded iPhones , vapes, a fly swatter and a 1950s radio form Recover-E, a replica racing car built entirely out of electronic waste by Manchester design studio Lazerian . Commissioned by Formula E team Envision Racing to highlight the growing issue of e-waste, Recover-E uses a modified drivetrain taken from a beach buggy to enable it to drive at slow speeds. Everyday objects are dotted all over the car, such as the driver halo made from Nintendo Wii controllers, a Sony VR headset and an electric fly swatter. Recover-E was unveiled by Envision Racing at the London e-prix. Photo by Paddy McGrath A pricing gun operates as the brake light, while a 1950s radio forms the radar antenna on top of the car. "You can show people how much waste we all go through, but when you take it and turn it into something else it becomes this vehicle to start to trigger people's minds and actually make them think about this stuff," Lazerian founder and owner Liam Hopkins told Deze...

Selene Sarı designs air purifying speaker that "cleanses the air through sound and music"

London-based designer Selene Sarı has created an air-purifier  called Vox Aeris that is also designed to work as a speaker. The device's dual-purpose is the result of three modes of operation – a cleaning mode, a listening mode and a Vox mode, which not only plays music but also cleans the air. Vox Aeris purifies the air via a scientific process called agglomeration, which Sarı, explained is a method where particles group together, "much like how snowballs form". Air particles are pushed into a recyclable "laser-engraved filter" which then filters the air The agglomeration process is formed via turbulence, which is produced by a vortex created by the device's internal fans and also by acoustics, created by low-frequency sounds from its speaker. These methods push air particles into a recyclable "laser-engraved filter", which then filters the air. The design includes a number of internal fans The dials on the device have a mix of speaker ...

Mid-century Zero House in London imbued with "Kubrick feel"

Timber ceilings and a fireplace clad in mahogany tiles feature in this London house , which its owners have renovated to honour the dwelling's mid-century roots and nod to the colour palette of Stanley Kubrick films. Located in north London's Stanmore, Zero House belongs to recording artists Ben Garrett and Rae Morris, whose former home in Primrose Hill is the Dezeen Award-winning Canyon House  designed by Studio Hagen Hall. Zero House in Stanmore was built between 1959 and 1961 Unlike their previous dwelling, Garrett and Morris updated Zero House themselves but adopted the same mid-century palette when creating its interiors. "The house was built between 1959 and 1961 by a Hungarian architect," said Garrett, who explained that the original design was informed by Californian Case Study Houses such as Charles and Ray Eames's 1949 home and design studio . The two-storey dwelling was renovated by its owners "It's a great example of a number of imag...

Bendable battery among sustainable materials at San Francisco exhibition

Local design firm Prowl Studio and investment company Baukunst have shown a variety of sustainable materials including aquatic plants meant for animal feed and an electric RV at a pop-up exhibition in San Francisco . Held in July, the BEACON exhibition was a one-day inaugural event featuring San Francisco-based companies exploring sustainable material science, technology and design. Design firm Prowl Studio and investment company Baukunst hosted twelve sustainable designers for an exhibit in San Francisco "For BEACON, we selected twelve exhibitors who are at the cutting edge of material science, product design, and systems-level solutions – from carbon-negative protein sources to electric RV's – all while holding design as a key principle," said Baukunst in a statement. The event was held in a first-floor space of Building 12, a former steel manufacturing plant recently renovated and slated to open later this year. The pop-up exhibition featured sustainable te...

Robots should be "good neighbours and good citizens" says Madeline Gannon

People are asking the wrong questions about humanity's relationship with AI argues Madeline Gannon , a designer whose work focuses on communication between robots and people. Gannon leads the research studio Atonaton and is known for her work with robots, which she has previously programmed using custom-made software to give them seemingly human traits. When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), she told Dezeen that what a lot of people are searching for is "consciousness and companionship". Madeline Gannon programmed these robots to behave like swans "In my work, by making these robots and breathing life into them, I've been doing simulated consciousness," she explained. "Simulated consciousness has been around in video games, math and generative growth algorithms for decades, but having that in your physical space is something quite new that we don't quite know how to deal with yet." Gannon points out that people such as anim...

Puntofilipino brings noble materials to apartment in former bank office

Design studio Puntofilipino has created a richly layered interior full of texture and patina for this Madrid apartment , designed to offer an unexpected take on the client's passion for Danish art and furniture. Set in a former bank office building in the Salamanca neighbourhood that dates back to 1929, the one-bedroom apartment was conceived as a refuge for the client. Puntofilipino has completed the Radikal Klassisk apartment "He was looking for a space of relaxation, silence and solitude," Puntofilipino founder Gema Gutiérrez told Dezeen. "Madrid is a very fast city and his need was to find a place where time stopped." Puntofilipino set out to design a space that reflects the client's love of Danish style without resorting to Scandinavian design cliches. Instead, the studio sought to foster a sense of timelessness by balancing modern and historical influences, calling the apartment Radikal Klassisk. The interior features natural materials such ...

Benzene rings inform patterned facades of Ascentage Pharmaceutical Headquarters

New York studio OLI Architecture used parametric technology to design the decorative facades of this office complex in Suzhou for biotechnology company Ascentage Pharma. The Ascentage Pharmaceutical Headquarters is spread across seven distinct buildings with facades informed by benzene – a molecule composed of six carbon atoms in a ring. OLI Architecture has created Ascentage Pharmaceutical Headquarters  Comprising a range of repeating units, the facades were created by OLI Architecture using parametric technology and digital fabrication techniques and are intended as a reference to the work of the cancer drug company Ascentage Pharma . "Symbolising the aspirations of Ascentage, whose cutting-edge research has developed new cancer drugs to improve the lifestyles of a future generation afflicted with diseases once thought untreatable or incurable, the campus was realised using some of the most technologically advanced digital design and fabrication tools," said the s...
